On December 7th, the 6th China Computer Education Conference was held in Xiamen, Fujian Province. At the conference, a certificate awarding ceremony for the 2023-2024 Annual Outstanding Teacher Award in Computer Science took place. This year, after recommendations from universities, preliminary qualification reviews, on-site classroom evaluations, and meeting reviews, 55 teachers were selected from 119 candidates to receive certificates jointly issued by the Computer Science Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education and the China Teachers Development Foundation. Professor Wenbo Shen from the School of Cyberspace Security at Zhejiang University was included in the 5th round of this award program. Currently, nine teachers from the school have received this honor.
The Outstanding Teacher Award in Computer Science for university computer science professionals is guided by the Ministry of Education and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It was jointly initiated by Turing Award winner, recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award, and foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor John Hopcroft, along with Professor Gao Wen, former chairman of the China Computer Federation and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The award is funded by several high-tech enterprises with significant social influence.
The aim of the award program is to evaluate the quality of undergraduate course instruction in some universities’ computer science programs, rewarding outstanding lecturers. It seeks to encourage university teachers to devote themselves to undergraduate teaching, reform and explore new teaching methods, and promote greater attention to undergraduate classroom teaching among university faculty members. Ultimately, it aims to improve the overall quality of undergraduate teaching in computer science across China.
